Technical information

Fornells starting barriers have the most advanced specifications available and meet the highest safety standards for jockeys and horses. Our engineers have developed the ultimate design for reliability, user-friendliness and longevity so that even the most prestigious televised races can count on a smooth start.

Below is a brief description of the principal features of our starting barriers.

Reliability, Safety, Longevity, User-friendliness

- All the principal mechanical parts (Doors, locks, shafts, platforms etc.) are made in Stainless Steel grade 304L with the triple advantage over traditionally used painted steels : greater longevity, higher mechanical resistance, and it stays looking good without having to re-paint !

- The front-gate opening mechanism has been designed to operate in the most difficult conditions.

  • Testing, trials and experience have allowed Fornells engineers to incorporate a highly robust opening mechanism that should not fail even after repeated horse kicks and bucks to the front gates ;
  • The stainless steel front gates are higly rigid and thus ensure a smooth opening and with their long steel bars on the upper half, they allow spectacular TV coverage of the horses and jockeys in the stalls !
  • The front-gate opening lock has been developed after trying and testing all the available technologies, and offers the utmost reliability and yet is easy to use and adjust ;
  • The patented power-unlock system combines robust and reliable mechanics, a single easy to replace magnet, and an off-board power box that allows easy back-up and the flexibility of a remote-controlled button for the starting official.
    This system ensures reliable operation for barriers with up to 20 stalls in the most extreme outdoor conditions (from the desert heat in the Middle East to the winter of Central Russia).
    Even in the unlikely case of an electrical power-box failure, a last-resort manual operation is a built-in feature.

- The heavy duty axles combined with the specialised turf tyres feature steering that is specifically adapted for starting barrier use on all types of gallop surfaces. Available options allow us to customise the wheel system to any specific requirements.
